What are the important of authentic material in ESL teaching?

Authentic material plays the important role in ESL teaching. There are many definitions for authentic material but I’d love to add up one from Peacock, 1997 who says that “authentic materials are materials that have been produced to fulfill some social purpose in the language community”. Yes, I couldn't agree more with this definition and I know that the materials will be useful in teaching English class. Authentic materials; map, newspaper, video, audio, menus, recipes, postcard, poster, broadcast, YouTube etc. keep students informed about what is happening in the world and students are exposed to real discourse, as in videos of interviews with famous people where intermediate students listen for gist. As teachers, we are educators who have responsibilities to support our students in every ways so why don’t we give the special teaching times to them by using authentic materials.

Using authentic material keep ESL interested and motivated.
Firstly, authentic material comes from native language that they use in daily life such as Video, news, TV’s show, menu, and magazine. Besides, it is useful to design in lesson. Using authentic material to develop communicative skills. Receptive skills are listening and reading. Speaking and writing are productive skills. We can show student to watch the movie and ask the question. Listening skills is very important because students have to listen before others skills. Authentic material provide not only language but also entertainment, culture as well. Students will be engaged by real material that are meaningful to them. They will like and be interested.

Authentic material is very important for ESL teaching.
I did lesson plan and I realized that authentic materials are very useful in class.
Using authentic materials is a good way to stimulate students’ attention because children can learn more by doing themselves.
Moreover, authentic materials provide the lesson become lively.
The authentic materials also help students get closer to the native speaker that they could adapt to use in their daily life.
So, I would like to say that the most important part of using authentic materials
in the classroom is students’ interest and motivation.
