Personally, I think computer games are similar to other media that have two side, both good and bad side. It's depend on the player to take side.  Some players have very good problem solving  skill, it can be learned and practiced. At almost every step in a simulation game you will be expected to solve a problem. This skill is an important skill in school, college, and in almost every career.

Umm I think yes ! Computer can help ESL students learn English as the games are mostly written in English. Games can help the players with vocabulary and reading skill. It is a good way to practice English. I don't play computer games but I have many friends who are addicted to the computer and they know a lot of vocabulary. In the past, I really want to play computer game but I couldn't stand sitting in front of the computer for a long time.

Most of my vocabulary I've learned came from video games.
I am a gamer since I was in kindergarten. When I was a kid, I didn't even understand a single word.
I didn't know what that game wanted me to do. After a while I understood it little by little.
And then here I am. I think it's all about expose yourself to English.
You don't need to study any language to be able to communicate in that language.
